Many parents have reached out to us regarding the Netflix series "13 Reasons Why." Based on a young adult novel of the same name, the series revolves around 17-year-old Hannah Baker, who commits suicide and leaves behind audio 13 audio recordings for people who she says in some way were part of why she killed herself. This series is raising a lot of concerns from mental health professionals, especially when teens are watching it without guidance or support, as it sensationalizes teen suicide and suggests that mental illness is not treatable. We want to make sure families know that we take any report of a student wanting to hurt him or herself very seriously. We have a district-wide protocol that we follow, which involves informing the parent and ensuring the student receives the help they need. For more information and resources on how to handle the tough questions that may arise if or when you decide to let your child watch the series, please check out this site from the National Association of School Psychologists and other resources below. This week, all 7th graders had the chance to begin establishing a 6 year Academic and Career Plan (ACP). This state of Virginia requires that all 7th grade students have an ACP, but it is not a binding document. A copy of this plan is kept in a student's academic record, and we will also send a copy home at the end of the school year with the final report card. View the presentation below and a blank copy of the 6 year plan below. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us! If you missed the parent presentation by Susan Sutton about Cyberbullying and Reputation: the lasting effects of one text, tweet and post, please contact us for a link where you can view the presentation.
Are you aware of all of the dangers of online communication?
We have noticed an escalation in cyberbullying and other problems on social media with our students. In an attempt to address these problems, please join us for a parent presentation by Susan Sutton, a national presenter on cyberbullying in schools. During this presentation, parents will be given a first class education on what their children are doing online, along with helpful advice on how to monitor the situation. Where: Buford Middle School Auditorium When: Monday, March 6th at 6:00 PM We hope to see you there! We can't believe it's already time for us to begin registering our students for courses for next year! The first step in understanding course options is attending our Parent University, which will be Thursday, January 26th at 6 pm at Buford. The rising 9th grade students and their parents will meet in the auditorium with counselors and staff from CHS. Rising 7th and 8th grade students and parents will meet in the Media Center for a Buford orientation. The Curriculum Fair will be held in classrooms adjacent to the Media Center. CATEC will conduct demonstrations in the Alpha Lab (Engineering). Rising 9th grade students (current 8th graders) heard a presentation from the CHS counselors on Tuesday, January 24th. The counselors will return on February 16th and 17th to meet individually with students to select their courses. Students should complete their course registration worksheet (to be distributed on February 6th) and bring it with them to their meeting with the counselor. The registration worksheet is attached below, along with the link for the CCS Program of Study that includes descriptions of all course offerings. Families may want to review the requirements for standard diplomas and advanced study diplomas to become familiar with what will be required for graduation. Rising 8th grade students were provided our registration information on Tuesday, January 24th to help them choose their electives. Students can complete this online form at home to select their elective choices. Teachers will make recommendations for their academic courses. See the Course Request worksheet below. Rising 7th grade students received a registration worksheet during classroom guidance with their school counselor, Mr. K. Students will complete their elective requests online in February. See the worksheet below for rising 7th grade options.
Thank you to those who attended our presentation at VSCA today! We were so disappointed with the technical difficulties we encountered, but we are very appreciative of your patience! Thanks for sticking with us! Here is our presentation for you to view (please view when your internet is working for the full effect!)- please don't hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have! Thank you again!
September 2016 is also known as National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.
Suicidal thoughts can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or background. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people and is often the result of mental health conditions that effect people when they are most vulnerable. Suicidal thoughts and suicide occur too frequently but should not be considered common and can indicate more serious issues. In many cases the individuals, friends and families affected by suicide are left in dark, feeling shame or stigma that prevents talking openly about issues dealing with suicide.
