Many parents have reached out to us regarding the Netflix series "13 Reasons Why." Based on a young adult novel of the same name, the series revolves around 17-year-old Hannah Baker, who commits suicide and leaves behind audio 13 audio recordings for people who she says in some way were part of why she killed herself.
This series is raising a lot of concerns from mental health professionals, especially when teens are watching it without guidance or support, as it sensationalizes teen suicide and suggests that mental illness is not treatable. We want to make sure families know that we take any report of a student wanting to hurt him or herself very seriously. We have a district-wide protocol that we follow, which involves informing the parent and ensuring the student receives the help they need.
For more information and resources on how to handle the tough questions that may arise if or when you decide to let your child watch the series, please check out this site from the National Association of School Psychologists and other resources below.
